Modern Inner City Apartment living often calls for clever design outcomes to make the most of challenging smaller floor spaces, provide access to light, ventilation and views. This half floor penthouse had a reasonable amount of floorspace, however the elongated ‘L’ shape floor plan presented its’ own design challenges. The brief from the owner was to create a liveable luxurious home featuring more usable and better connected spaces; maximise city and river views; provide access to light and natural ventilation while considering city noise and privacy for occupants.

We approached the design strategy by first understanding how we could manipulate the existing floor to meet the brief but minimising the need to adjust existing services and walls. Our initial conceptual design strategy focused on swapping the locations of the Master Suite with the Kitchen and creating new city facing open plan living, dining and entertaining spaces connected to the entry but separating the new master suite from more private existing bedroom and family spaces deeper into the apartment. The kitchen and bar area become pivotal to the success of this new floor plan layout.  The new master suite set on the quiet side of the apartment nearer to the main entry commands spectacular views to the river and surrounding suburbs while still maintaining glimpses back to the city.

The curation of a unified materials finishes palate using light timbers – natural stones and lighter wall and ceiling colours to contrast with selected dark and brass feature elements creates a minimalist aesthetic with a unique mix of small moments of bling and warmth in feature materials. The resulting apartment is one of functional design which exudes effortless luxury.
